Leadership is a process, not a destination I recently stumbled across a Minutes article titled ‘Leadership strategies that build trust.’ The article is chocked full of leadership wisdoms but what resonated with me was the preamble, “You never master the art of leadership.” As you set your goals for 2021, don’t beat yourself up what you did and didn’t do in 2020. Instead replace your worry with a reflective leadership practice built upon the fact that leadership is a process not a destination. Kick-off your 2021 goal setting session with this reflective exercise: Start by reflecting upon and recognizing your areas of growth over the past year. Write these items down. Now pat yourself on the back for a job well done. Next, do the same for your team members.
This simple reflective exercise gives us grace with ourselves and others. It also reinforces the practices of reflection, awareness, and feedback, all important to our leadership process.
